What we do

Kensho Dojo is a Shotokan Karate club located in Tilehurst, in Reading - based in the Thames Valley area of Berkshire. Weekly martial arts instruction include Shotokan Karate class with a belend of Tai Chi and Aikido. The club is affiliated to the English Traditional Karate Federation, and accepts members from Reading, Lower Earley, Woodley, Earley, Calcot, Burghfield Common, Caversham and Tilehurst

Since we are affiliated to ETKF, our basic style is Shotokan Karate. But, instead of restricting ourselves to Karate, we incorporate principles from various arts like Tai Chi, Aikido and so on. We believe that what works is what is right.

Different people have different body physiology, and the structure and type of body dictates the ability of an individual to perform an action. At the Kensho Dojo you are encouraged to understand your own body and awaken the martial artist lying dormant in you.

Apart from the regular training we also encourage students to attends workshops by experts in various fields like Pressure points (Rick Clark, Bruce Miller, Rick Moneymaker), Internal arts (Master Yang Lin Sheng).
Our training is for life, not to take life, hence the dojo kun of Karate stands quite appropriate for our club.

Karate training consists mainly of the following

  1. Kihon: The basic training drill, involves repetition of basic movements like punches, blocks, kicks etc in an effort to establish habits
  2. Kata: Predetermined sequence of blocks and attacks against multiple imaginary opponents
  3. Kumite: Sparring with control using techniques from kihon and kata
